The Future of Wildlife Lies in the Hands of Veterinarians

Support the next generation of veterinarians in Kenya!

The next generation of veterinarians at the University of Nairobi and Egerton University have the opportunity to participate in VI’s Vet Training Field Program on conservancy this June to learn more about the amazing wildlife that surrounds them, despite the fact that they rarely have the opportunity to get hands-on experience to learn how to treat them.

VI’s Vet Training Program, in partnership with both Universities, the Kenya Wildlife Service and Laikipia County Government, runs for two weeks, with 10 students attending each week. We need your help for the successful launch of the field component of this program, to get the students out in the field!

Veterinarians are our heroes because not only do they care for animals, they are in fact caring for the health of people and our shared environment. We are all interconnected!

Our program's strategic approach is to enhance veterinary capacity and exposure by providing medical equipment, education, and hands-on externship.

The Future of Wildlife Lies in the Hands of Veterinarians

The total cost to run the program is $25,000 which will cover expenses for accommodations, meals, transportation, lecturers, supplies, and insurance. With your help, we can connect future veterinarians with the opportunities they need to care for some of our world’s most precious wildlife!

The wildlife population in Kenya is in the range of over 300,000 animals split in over 40 species of mammals. This, coupled with an ever increasing human population of 55 million, has resulted in a shared ecosystem with domestic animals and human beings, a triad that is significant with emerging and reemerging diseases as well as trauma cases from human wildlife conflict.

The theoretical component of VI’s Vet Training Program began November 3, 2023 and on June 16, 2024, with your help, the students will head out to conservancy with the goal of providing graduating veterinarians with tangible field experience in optimal wildlife health care.
