A few statistics that shed light on the severity of this unspoken crisis:
The issue is a global concern: Veterinarians are reportedly at a higher risk of experiencing depression, anxiety, stress, and/or suicidal ideations compared to the general population in, for example, Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, and Germany.
Nearly 70% of veterinarians have lost a colleague or peer to suicide. In the US, veterinarians are up to 3.5 times more likely to die by suicide than members of the general population. Vets International (VI) envisions a future in which veterinarians have a safe space where they can express their vulnerabilities, seek assistance, and reignite their passion for being stewards for animal welfare.
VI partners with mental health specialists to provide assistance to veterinarians facing health issues.
VI Revitalization Program offers veterinary care services in under-served communities around the world. Traveling to new places, volunteering, and knowing that their work matters and that they are making a significant impact on the lives of animals and people, helps veterinarians revitalize their passion for their profession.
