What is Needed

To safeguard their community from zoonotic diseases transmitted by free-roaming animals, the people of Todos Santos, and other similar communities, need to be informed on how to care for their pets.

Systems must be put into place to ensure pet health, and resulting human health through access to veterinary care, vaccinations and medicines not readily available in this remote location.

What We do

With our partners at the Global Alliance for Animals and People (GAAP), Vets International (VI) has provided vital resources and educational programs. In 2008, we started a rapidly expanding vaccination and sterilization campaign in Todos Santos. In addition, VI has connected with the locals through community day events that teach children and their families about the relationship of healthy pets to healthy humans, and how to handle encounters with aggressive or sick animals.

Animal health has dramatically improved in the region and local residents are making positive changes in how they care for their pets. The GAAP and VI have also trained a special paraveternarian, Andrés Carrillo, to provide local veterinary services for Todos Santos throughout the year. Under Andres’ guidance, the village has access to animal vaccines, basic checkups and needed medications to maintain good animal health.

Free roaming domestic animals are at great risk of contracting rabies and parasites, which pose a serious public health threat of transmission of diseases to people.
