When the last male Northern White Rhino was euthanized because of wounds in 2018, it signaled a new era with yet another species lost forever. Over the past few years, scientists worked feverishly to inseminate the last two remaining female white rhinos - Najin and Fatu - hoping they could prevent the end of this species.
Unfortunately, they soon learned that neither Najin nor Fatu could successfully carry a baby rhino to term. Today, the hope of saving the species depends on the ability of scientists to accomplish something that has never been tried before - finding a surrogate rhino from the south.
As we wait to see if this will work, Veterinarians International is determined to make sure that Najin and Fatu are the last time we see a species become extinct.
